Time is Running Out!
Time is Running Out!
A few weeks back we spoke about saving the net for small businesses but now let’s talk about the impact it has on us all. We all enjoy the open content of the internet. How many of you go on the internet every day to find information, binge watch shows on Netflix or Hulu, or as we say “live off of the internet”? I know I do! One thing that can happen when the major internet providers, like Comcast, take over we lose what we have now. Imagine “Comcastagram” instead of “Instagram”. Scary thought! I would say I am not trying to scare you, but I am. You should be scared. Scared of losing something that is so a part of our daily lives and a freedom that is our right to have. We should also be scared of the unknown of what could occur if we do lose net neutrality because no one really knows what will happen. The question is, do we want to find out the hard way?
Net neutrality is a freedom we take for granted. It is a part of our daily lives now. This newer generation will not remember a time without internet but all the others do. Homework and projects in Encyclopedias and trips to the library, and marketing your business through newspapers and flyers…whew those were exhausting times! Think now of the ease we have with the internet because of its open content. If we want to know something it is right at our fingertips. This new generation, the Millennials and even ourselves, have built all our lives on the internet and even if we are not going to lose the internet in full, losing our free and open use of the internet we have now is crucial to how we conduct our lives, businesses, and futures. And this is especially crucial for the lives of the Millennials and anyone that stake their futures on it being open and neutral to all.
Many say it is an attack on our freedom of speech and in a way it is. Our ability to express ourselves or create for ourselves will most likely be affected it if we lose the net neutrality battle. One of the major reasons is because the ISP’s are learning crafty ways to blur the lines of net neutrality and the hindrance of our freedoms of the internet. It’s about money. With the current rules in place, the internet is open and allows you to launch what you want when you want and it does not favor one site over the other. If net neutrality is taken away, the possibilities of losing our open and free internet are basically inevitable. And then we are all forced to work in that gray area with the ones who run the internet.
Time is of the Essence
There are four questions that we need to ask to realize how serious our freedom of internet really is to us.
- Are you happy with insurance and healthcare when run by greedy companies?
- Are you happy with food quality run by greedy companies?
- Are you happy with your current internet customer service run by greedy companies?
- Do you like when greedy companies pay money to influence your Representative?
Time is of the essence. Action needs to be taken now. On December 14th the decision will be made what happens and who will run the internet. Will the new FCC laws withstand the attacks or will the ISP’s take over and limit our internet freedoms? Take time to join the fight for our internet freedoms.
